Marla Mase’s album Speak Deluxe is more than just an album, but a fine specimen of human expression and artistic value. She mixes various genres including punk, soul, reggae and spoken word. Poetry is what ties these different musical genres together, and the fact that Mase is able to masterfully incorporate these different music traditions only reveals how deep her poetic sensibilities truly are. Such genres as punk have always defied the traditional use of labels, and Mase manages to capture the essence of what this genre stands for. Her music also has the energy and spunk of rock n’ roll that will keep listeners engaged. The reggae and soul elements in the album slows down portions of the songs, adding a soothing while light hearted touch to her music. The soul and rock elements balance each other nicely in yin and yang style while being able to have a strictly rock or reggae style in other songs.
She will be releasing a remastered version of her album Speak Deluxe which includes six extra tracks. New fans to her music, along with those who bought the 2010 album, will want to invest in the remastered version, not only to get access to more meaningful content, but to also support the artist. Artists that choose to experiment and depart from traditional categories should be supported in order to combat the oversaturation and confining nature of the mainstream music industry.
