Jones is obviously vocalist is an accomplished singer/songwriter. Each style, each song on this CD expresses something a bit different than the other – a complete moment if you will. To me it’s comparable to looking into then suddenly experiencing what it is to be inside a snapshot of time. Some of the snapshots are silly or laugh-out-loud funny, some serious and passionate. Others are of contentment, exuberance, sadness, reverence. It’s a time capsule of time really.
“Golden Road” presents 10 gems and gently creates the classic pop musical environment right away with Track 1 “Broken Heart” with its strong intro groove, and harmonic exuberance. This song benefits well from a powerful generation of musicians with similar interests in classic alt-folk but varying tastes still appealing to contemporary rock fans. With a sound ranging from slop folk to pop served up via a melting pot catalog that translates well to the listener’s world. The next few tracks “Devil Down” and “Black Coffee” and my personal favorite Child of the Beast” present more marketable pieces. Some pieces possess a 90’s folk mystique like “Rise No More” and the last 4 tracks. A few notable others are very melodic “Shallow Pockets” and a few may cause you to stomp your feet. The keys and notes fall smoothly yet so effortlessly and with every second that passes as if these notes and words were meant for each other. The acoustic and slow rhythmic pace of many tracks can quickly shift and change at a moments notice making music somewhat unpredictable in placed. Overall this CD is rich with musical flavors, textures and top tiered playing from all involved. As a singer Jones feels comfortable within his own skin and pulls it off flawlessly. She clearly possesses an immense amount of talent and creativity and has an impressive vocal skillet extremely compatible to this style of music. The amazing vocal and songwriting finesse just bring the whole thing together via her charm and charisma.
“Golden Road” by Laney Jones is truly a highlight release with some incredible moments that portray true grit & emotion and will sure to evoke some strong reactions from many. In the end it’s a very impassioned musical experience all around and regardless if you like your music happy, sad, short, sheet, and overly synthetic or long I guarantee “Golden Road” will cause you to feel something———-well powerful.
