Marc Daniels – “Summer Song” single
There is a certain mindset that says that country musicians must come from the Southern half of the United States. That’s as antiquated and ridiculous as saying that you can’t have real blues that comes from England or that Celtic music in the United States isn’t really Irish. The fact of the matter is, we live in a world where boundaries and borders are constantly being bent and crossed. Musical styles might start in one particular region, but they don’t need to stay there. Spokane, Washington born Marc Daniels beautifully bears out this point on his new single “Summer Song”.The very history of rock music displays that better than just about anything. The original rock and roll was created in the United States, mostly the South. It was tied pretty closely to country music. As its popularity waned, it was still influencing kids in England. A few of those, most notably the Beatles, took it up and the Liverpool sound was born, bringing rock music back to the US. That in turn inspired all kinds of American kids.
“Summer Song” definitely aligns itself as more of a rocking country number and that added grit helps make it all the more convincing for any listener. It really manages to capture its target audience and pull them in for a great experience. The lyrics bring an answer to the plight of the average working class person through lines like “I’m dreamin’ of a place where the drinks are cold/Cause this damn routine is gettin’ old/Man I wish I could kiss this place goodbye.” Fun music like this could be one answer to that kind of monotony.
It is, largely, built around the acoustic guitar, but “Summer Song” likewise sports an effective rhythm section who knows how to lay down a strong foundation for this sort of music. Despite the inherent commercial appeal of this song, one never gets the feeling that the players are coasting or else not fully invested in delivering a substantive musical experience. It doesn’t matter where you live, this kind of country based music is catchy. It’s effective and likely to click on some level. Daniels is a singer completely engaged with his art and unabashedly loves the style of this piece. The production frames everything in a larger than life sort of way and brings great balance to the competing instruments. “Summer Song” is a success on every level and qualifies as one of the best exponents from the pop country school of music in many moons. This is a real singer with grit and gravitas to burn who more than adequately gets inside this sturdy bit of country pop rock and makes it his own through and through. Marc Daniels exhibits the sort of talent for this thing that we associate with long careers and we can be sure, based on this track alone, to be hearing from him again in an even bigger and bolder fashion than before.
