Imagine you are sitting in a hole in the wall pub, definitely one with integrity, and you hear a band start to play. They are gritty, masculine to the core and have a vibe about them that makes you think Johnny Cash could follow if that were possible. You might be in or around Selma, CA and watching The Long Black Veils onstage. Their style includes the best of folk and mixes it with hint of dark country roots and some rock. Songs like Promises and Cigarettes embody that masculine sentiment with the husky undertones of the vocals and the nonsensical ways of the music. Every note is straightforward and rugged like in Rust, the most Cash like of the lot, with Darkhorse being a close second in that category. Like many folk artists, The Long Black Veils are clearly storytellers and that can be found greatly in Raise Your Glass. Another thing to point out about this band is their knack for the harmonica, be it fast in Strung Out Town, or slow in Mountain. The Long Black Veils are for those who have a liking for music that lays somewhere between the honesty of country, the storytelling ways of folk and the attitude of rock, then this band and their music if definitely for you.
