The Royal Guard drop 5 new tracks
(NEW YORK) The Royal Guard are a 3-piece alternative rock band which hails from New York but have spent the last 5 years overseas. They are gearing up to release their latest full length effort to be entitled “Hail the King”. Band members include, Todd Davidson (Lead Vocals, Guitar), Andy Ascolese (Guitar, Vocals), Fred Scragg (Drums).
I can hear influences from Fuel, Default, Smile Empty Soul, Tantric and 12 Atones. Lyrics inspired by ordinary experiences, nature, and an adventurous spirit round out an exceptional album released in 2014. While the deep soulful lyrics and impressive musical talent seem to reach far beyond. These guys deliver an unmistakable and pulsating youthful energy that permeates these songs. There is a certain fearlessness in the music, a diving in and pushing forward that reflect another side of this multi-talented young band. The CD starts off with “I Wanna Know” which smooth harmonies, hot rhythm section and a captivating vocal performance from Davidson. Harmonies are well executed.
Being a professional event planner, I cannot get out of my head the idea that many tracks on this CD filling almost any function. All 5 new songs showcased on their Reverbnation page have an almost whimsical feel that makes the world seem right but there’s an underlying sense of hope that your future looks brighter than your past. Just when you think you got this guy and his band down you get blindsided by more songwriting depth. This leads us right into my favorite track on the CD “Save Me”. It’s got more of a short but sweet message, still possessing a powerful style and grace. Not only is Davidson a capable singer but I suspect his contribution to the writing and arrangements of all these songs is of paramount importance. Songwriting makes the difference. This is where true talent either flourishes or fails to show up. Here these 3 deliver the goods! Which is to say nothing of the pervasive and contagious chemistry they shares with each other. As a whole the band plays like a well oiled machine. I might add there are songs here for fans on the West Coast. Indeed these guy aim to please new listeners as well as his songs are also placed in a near perfect arrangement – 5 solid pieces.
Notable standouts for me are “I Wanna Know” the title track, “Going Down.”
The CD as a whole provides a wonderful acoustic unplugged setting and an earthy musical ambience straight from the heart. Another hit for me is which kind of hit me on the third listen was “Why Can’t We Be Together”. The Royal Guard is one of the most intriguing rock bands from New York I’ve heard in a long while.
